Song Obsessions - Starboy and On Hold #theXX #theWeekend

I have been so over the radio lately. Too many repeats and new songs that sound the same mixed with some good ones that got old quickly. I am ready and waiting for a new music season!

Despite the lull in exciting new music these two songs have been playing on repeat for the last few months. I still turn it up when they come on and continue to play them again when I get home.

The Weekend has reached a whole new level with Starboy. The unexpected beat changes and variations in his voice pattern keep things interesting over and over again. It is a challenging song to memorize beginning to end. Plus its smoother than anything I've heard recently.

Starboy's music video has nearly reach 1 BILLION views and it has earned every single one. According to Urban Dictionary a starboy is "womanizer, a philanderer". Bummer.
I was hoping it was something epic and/ or extraterrestrial haha.

When does it stop? When do you stop? When do you dare me to?

On Hold begins rather calmly but when it gets to this part I can't help but dance. The trap/dubstep beat is sick. I have totally replayed the loop before because it is my absolute favorite part of the song and one of my favorite pieces of any song the in last 6 months or so.

Anything epic that I am totally missing? Let me know.

This Song Will Make You Werk!!!! #WildHorses #BishopBriggs

My newest song obsession is Wild Horses by Bishop Briggs. At the moment the official music video only has 140k views. It was just published in Dec 2016. If you haven't heard it yet I urge you give it a shot!

When I first heard this song I was listening to 94.7, the indie radio station over here in PDX. It's a mellow tune with deep bass that makes me wanna run as fast as I can so that I can be a wild horse too. Domestication isn't nearly as interesting.

Bishop's look is totally 90s but that's the thing right now. I hold Miley partially responsible for bringing it back. I made a lot of strange fashion choices during that time in my life, even as a child. Lots of neon, fuzzy sweaters and tattoo necklaces! I remember that Maurice's used to be super cool back then. Now it's much tamer.

Bishop sounds kind of bored when she sings but I relate to it in a Daria sort of way. I wish the Daria revival was actually a thing. She's the coolest. Well, maybe second to the Ghost World crew.

Happy Valentine's Day Beauties!!!

Genius James Bay

If faux gospel folk like the jaw dropping Hozier is your thing you may already listen to James Bay. He's pretty mainstream now. I am just mesmerized by his music.

Just about anyone who has fallen out of love with someone at one point or another will resonate with this song. When I am in a mood it brings tears to my eyes haha. This is the song that got me into James Bay. Keep pulling on them heartstrings!

This song is nearly as popular as the first. The chorus is so fun to sing. Extra drama with some melody for good measure. The bridge that starts at 2:14 is everything.
"Lonely water, lonely water, won't you let us wander
Let us hold each other." Lyrics from Google Play Music
These two are the only widely published James Bay songs I like right now but they are so amazing that I still wanted to write this post. Those songs alone are worth it. So good.

Scars just doesn't get me. It's starts to slow and my attention drifts away before I get to the chorus. I feel similarly about Move Together.

Best Fake Smile is not my speed. It sounds all right but it's not something that I can relate to. The lonely water lyrics make up for it all. One things for sure, Bay is an amazing writer/composer!

Revival of the Sneaker Pimps

On my way back from the office 94.7 KNRK played 6 Underground by the Sneaker Pimps and it seriously made my whole day. I had totally forgotten about them. Seriously can't believe myself because when I finally discovered Becoming X years ago it was on constant replay.

This is the one that made it onto the radio today. Probably their most popular song.

That chorus though.

The sounds in this one are just off the charts. So mesmerizing.

"She makes every move they make. She takes everything they take. She must be a Thelma or Louise. She must be a post-modern sleaze."

Apparently the Sneaker Pimps reunited in 2015 after a 10 year hiatus and they are working on a new album. They are pretty hidden at the moment, so hoping its true.

When we saw Diplo and his Dad play in Vegas

We spent this spring break in Vegas to snag some sunshine and see all the sights. With all of the shows there it was hard to choose one but Diplo was only $25 a ticket so we decided to give it a go. We had just missed the whole Major Lazer crew the week before but Diplo did not disappoint!

Diplo's Dad warming up the crowd
Diplo has a Mad Decent Monday Show once or twice a month in Vegas. Apparently the show has been going on for 7 years already! Unlike normal EDM concerts this one requires nicer apparel since it is in a pretty fancy night club called XS which is attached to the Wynn. LBDs and tuxes gallore.

I really believe that these are real flowers. It's surreal!
The Wynn is just gorgeous and filled with all types of beautiful flower displays.

So tempted to cosplay and take pics here. Maybe Dorothy or Alice?
The concert was epic. I didn't get any pics of Diplo since we were in the crowd. I was afraid to take my phone out for fear of it falling on the floor and getting stomped on. I totally dropped it while snapping a few pics while Diplo's Dad was playing but thankfully it survived.

Diplo's Dad played for hours before Diplo arrived but he's a great DJ. Some crowd friends told us who he was. When Diplo got on stage he played all of his collab hits including Where Are You Now and Lean On. I was content after those two but there were lots of awesome remixes too! The steam, glitter and lazers were just the best. Awesome show.

Diplo called Alesso to the stage at the end. Some of Alesso's songs have hundreds of millions of streams on Spotify, especially Heroes (We Could Be).  He seems to play a lot at the XS lounge too, I bet it's epic.

Jumping and down to the beat with the glow noodles was really fun and great exercise actually. Totally earned our buffet at the Bellagio the next day, which was amazing although I was exhausted. Hope that you all had a wonderful Spring Break!

Conspiracy Songs

This song is my all time favorite conspiracy song. It is perfect for those paranoid times when you think everyone is watching you. It is a stoner rock song by Chrome Locus. I have always been disappointed that this band only put out one CD. If you have ever been interested in the Illuminati or The Golden Dawn you must listen to this song.

S.P.O.C.K. is a band that has loads of songs about aliens, spaceships, and general nerdy space stuff. This song is about alien implants and abduction. It is one of my favorite songs on that subject. I think it is particularly of interest because I may get to dive down Extraterrestrial Highway soon!

This song starts like it's going to be another alien implant song, but then goes sideways saying the government is trying to kill us all with drugs and food. Noble Gas is a strange little band with a lot of strange songs. I couldn't find Hissler Snakes on YouTube, but you can listen to it and a lot more of their crazy stuff here.

Play the Theremin Today on Google! For Clara

Today would have been Clara Rockmore's 105th birthday and there is no better way to celebrate than by playing the theremin. Can't get your hands on a real one? No worries, Google has you covered.

This is the first time I have ever heard of this awesome instrument. I totally want to try it IRL. I am sure that its pretty challenging to hit the right notes due to the fact that there are no defined areas to hit but I love the concept of freely moving music.

Cool Facts from the Telegraph:

  • Clara was friends with the inventor of the theremin, Lev Termen aka Leon Theremin.
  • The theremin was the first electronic instrument.
  • Clara was a child prodigy, originally known for her violin skills.
  • The theremin produced the electronic sounds in Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys!

Clara and Leon: two cool cats with mad skills.

Apparently Leon proposed to Clara multiple times but she ended up choosing attorney Robert Rockmore instead. Leon was an amazing inventor. Albert Einstein and Joseph Schillinger are among his mentors (Wikipedia).

Hope that you all are having a wonderful week!

Grouplove and Ballparkmusic

Next Life Already by Ballpark Music was totally my anthem last week. It's been playing here in the Portland area for awhile now on 94.7 KNRK and it is the first song I've heard by the band. At first it totally bothered me because it reminds me of a Grouplove song, and I can't figure out which one. Now I'm all about it.

Both Grouplove and Ballpark Music are totally versatile and creative. I think the combo of male and female vocals, similar vocal tones and maybe similar chords makes me automatically put them in the same category. Both are totally my style.

So inspired by how awesome this song sounds with nothing but an acoustic guitar and two voices. Goals!

Grouplove has been a favorite artist of hubby and I for a few years now. He thinks that Shark Attack is the song that reminds me of Next Life Already but they are both very different. Maybe the songs sound different in my memory than they do when I listen to them. They both envoke that whole, "What is going on with my life?" feeling.

Trippin' The Light Fantastic is another of my favorites by Ballpark Music because it is so fun. This video is kind of like Napoleon Dynamite but even dorkier, like real life dork status. Way dorkier than the movies. Sweet!

I haven't seen Paper Towns but the fact that they featured a Grouplove song makes me curious although I normally wouldn't be. Love this line from No Drama Queen "My heart, it's all crazy. I think its time to runaway.

Surrender is a mellow Ballpark Music song. So comforting.

Colors by Grouplove. It's just so good. One of my favorite songs. Totally reminiscent of the Pixies, those legendary beasts. If only Kim Deal comes back...

Hope that you are all having a beautiful week. Leap Day totally threw me off somehow, I still haven't changed the date on my watch so I'm a day ahead. The primaries have been distracting too. What a nutty election!

Keep your resolution with the best workout songs of 2015!

With almost one month under our belts, 2015 is officially and undeniably over. But I'm not finished listening to the hits yet. Here are my top ten workout songs taken from the Billboard Hot 100 - 2015, building in intensity. Perfect for running!

There are two Bieber songs on here. I seriously never ever thought that I'd like him but I love What Do You Mean?. It's so relatable, because there are tons of times when I have no idea what I mean but totally expect my people to haha.

Hotline Bling is my favorite song of the whole lot. Before this song Drake was just "meh" in my book but this brought him to a whole new level. I have listened to this song so. many. times. The sweater dance is seriously the best.

I featured Lean on by Major Lazer back in June, always amazing! So happy that it made it to Billboard's 100. The Major Lazer crew is composed of music wizards. So good.

Wishing you a wonderful week!

Just To Be Still - New Song on Soundcloud

Conflicted consumerism.

Just to Be Still
- KM

I need a day
Just to be still
Just to lay here
Against your will

And I wont eat
And I wont drink
And I wont listen
I'll barely blink

Cuz I don't wanna
I don't wanna
I don't wanna want
But I
I want it
I want it all

And I don't wanna
I don't wanna
I don't wanna
I don't wanna cry
But I'm
I'm bawling
My makeup is ruined

And I don't wanna
I don't wanna
I don't wanna fight
But I'm
I'm yelling
I'm screaming at you

I don't wanna I don't wanna I don't wanna want

Please just hold
Hold On

Half the Same Person - New Song on Soundcloud

Always in my DNA.

Half the Same Person

Sweet memories they never fade
No they're alive
Sometimes they change

You and I are half the same person
And all my hurts
I know you could feel them
Half my joys are your joys too
Now its so good I wish I could show you

You and I are half the same person
And all my hurts
I know you could feel them
Half my joys are your joys too
Now its so good I wish I could show you

Wish I could show you

Maybe its all meant to be
Maybe you're looking down at me
But we don't really know
No we don't really know

Maybe you're shining down from above
Sending us all your love
But we don't really know
Don't really don't really don't really know

You and I are half the same person
And all my hurts
I know you could feel them
Half my joys are your joys too
Now its so good I wish I could show you

Sweet memories they never fade
No they're alive
Sometimes they change

Let's All Be Gypsies! New Song on Soundcloud

I love to wander. Every once in awhile I think that having the freedom to move from place to place in a heartbeat would be my absolute dream life. But then I remember how much I love my leather sofa... I think I just need to make a ton of money so I can wander during the summer and settle down during the winter.

Let's All Be Gypsies
-me

I'm going 99
My mind
Is always moving
Yeah we say this all the time
But its
Much more than dreaming

I lie awake
Can't stop the
Can't stop the beat
I feel a quake
Right under
Under my feet

So come on darling
Roll along with me
Let's all be gypsies
Leave our apartment
Sell all our things
And buy an RV

We'll roll from Portland to Ontario
Then drive all the way to Mexico
So come on darling
Roll along with me
Let's all be gypsies

I lie awake
Can't stop the
Can't stop the beat
I feel a quake
Right under
Under my feet

So come on darling
Roll along with me
Let's all be gypsies
Leave our apartment
Sell all our things
And buy an RV

I can write and sing and you can code
Between you and me we're bound to hit gold
So come on darling ride along with me
Let's all be gypsies

I'm going 99
My mind
Is always moving
Yeah we say this all the time
But its
Much more than dreaming

Why Artists Hide: On Artistic Freedom and Self Expression in a World of Professionals

Many of us grow up with talent and passion for the arts. As we enter the professional realm most people sacrifice artistic endeavors in order to participate in culturally approved "grown up" or mainstream hobbies such as golf and spin class in order to appear professional and disciplined. Others shut down early on in the game because they feel that they aren't good enough, even as children. Although most people love to sing and paint there are many reasons that people feel obligated to hide their love of the arts.

We each have a unique imprint to leave on this world whether it is in the form of poetry, painting, pottery, theatre, photography, music or all of the above. There may be some people who have always thought that anything creative is boring and uninteresting but I simply cannot relate. I find that most of people with that attitude tend to be carrying barriers put up by the overbearing views of families and society. I believe that many people in this world feel unable to express themselves for fear of a negative social or economical impact.

Many of those that are still creating well into adulthood eventually give up their ambitions because they are not profitable enough. Others find ways to make it profitable by compromising the fruits of their labor, creating what they know will sell rather than what is flowing through their veins. Some struggle trying to make ends meet because they refuse to compromise. A select few have the resources, connections and luxury to be a truly free and respected artist.

Personally I have decided to keep on going even though I need to have alternate employment in order to remain financially secure. Songwriting and blog authoring are both very important to me however I certainly hide them from my workplace. I truly believe that my music and blog posts are harmless and even potentially helpful to others who can relate but it feels risky to share any sort of artistic endeavor in this society. I strongly believe that it doesn't have to be this way.

In our society we are taught to be closed. We are taught to "leave everything at the door" when we enter our schools and workplaces. In some ways this is good, work can be an escape from your personal troubles or at least a replacement of troubles. But perhaps life could be more open. Perhaps we could share more. Perhaps that would alleviate some of the weight depressing the masses instead of drowning hardships with tasty food, excessive media, juicy gossip and who knows what.

I believe that oppressing artistic expression is ultimately damaging to your psyche and emotional well being. Creatives who suppress their artistic energy often suffer from depression and anxiety. Some creatives go on to live vicariously through the creativity and expression of others who have been more successful. This can work to some extent, however I believe that having an artistic outlet is important in order to truly express and communicate the entire spectrum of emotions.

When I first "came out of the closet" as a songwriter I was a bit shocked by those who supported me and by those who did not. I had been writing songs for ages which I largely kept to myself outside of a few that I shared in Blues Band and Man Shoes. Many of my friends and family were supportive of my decision to begin sharing with the world, even more than I had anticipated, however there were a few people whom I considered to be near and dear who straight up told me that it was a bad idea.

I was certainly overenthusiastic, daydreaming about being a rock star as always. They were worried for my family's finances and reputation. I truly needed an outlet. One friend mentioned that I should write and share children's music instead of my music. I actually do write songs for my sons sometimes but my deepest expression lies in the songs that I write from the heart.

Sharing my music on Soundcloud and blogging with my best friend here at 11:42 Style are both extremely satisfying. Personally I feel like these projects are two of the best things that I have ever done in my pursuit of self discovery. I believe that it has certainly helped me professionally because I feel more balanced and at peace but I don't dare talk about either of them to my coworkers or clients! In the future I would love to see our society evolve into a place where authentic self expression is truly celebrated and shared beyond art, music and poetry class.

I'll Be Happy Just For You - New Song on Soundcloud

This ones for my babies :).

I'll be happy just for you
I'll be happy just for you
Even when I'm feeling blue
I'll be happy just for you

Baby darling
Don't you cry
You're the apple of my eye
The sun will rise
The stars may fall
But I will be there through it all

Time, time spins faster
Time, times get harder
There may be times
When we may drift apart
But know my darling know
You'll always be in my heart

I will smile just for you
I will smile just for you
Even when I'm feeling blue
I will smile just for you

Time, time get tougher
Time, times spin faster
There may be times
When we may drift apart
But know my darling know
You'll always be in my heart

I'll be happy just for you
I'll be happy just for you
Even when I'm feeling blue
I'll be happy just for you

EBM: Electronic Body Music

I've been trying to work out more since I found out my cardio seriously sucks on a hike in Feburary. I've been doing some HIIT on a stationary bike since then. It took me a while to find the right kind of music to make the exertion tolerable. I tried my old trick of listening to Pimsleur language tapes, but it really only works with less intense exercise. I tried watching some anime, but I couldn't read the subtitles while my eyes were bouncing around. I tried some rock and some new-fangled dance music, but those just made me slow and irritated. Then I found the perfect mix of dance beats, cheesiness, and driving anger: EBM.

Don't get this confused with EDM, kids. It's a goth version of dance music that began in the 80's. It has a few sub-genres like future-pop, which I think are quite enjoyable. I drives me forward in my workouts with the fear of being chased by drugged-out, dystopian, cyborgs. I love it.

Green Jello

I had so much fun making my own green gelatin. Taking backlit pictures of this ectoplasmic space goo was such a blast!

Juice of 1 lime (2 tablespoons)
Zest of 2 limes(1 teaspoon packed)
1 tablespoon Gelatin powder(+2 teaspoons if you want squares instead of goo)
1/4 heaping cup Sugar (more if you like it sweet)
Water
3 drops Green Food Coloring (optional)

Add lime juice and gelatin to 1/2 cup cold water.

Boil 1 1/2 cups of water and add lime zest.

Boil for a bit until you can smell the lime.

Dissolve the sugar in the boiling lime-water.

Add the boiling water to the cold, gelatin water.

Add food coloring and stir.

This awesome, yellowish, pond-scum look is what you're going to get if you forgo the food coloring.

Put in fridge for about 8 hours. The freezer will speed it up a bit, but don't -whatever you do- don't let it freeze.

The lime zest will probably settle in the bottom and you will be able to see it, so the jello won't be perfectly clear like the commercial stuff. It looks spookier, but you should probably strain it out with cheese cloth after it boils with the sugar for a bit because it leaves a weird texture. If you forgot, you can always just cut off the bottom where most of it settles, which is what I ended up doing.

Green Jellÿ, pronounced green jello, named their band after what they thought was the worst flavor of Jello. Whatever. I've always loved green jello, even when I was a little kid at the hospital. They also self-report themselves as the world's worst band. I think I would have to disagree with them on that, too. They are like a cheesier Gwar, which I happen to find quite amusing. Check 'em out. It's great fun to listen to while playing with your gelatinous space-goo.

The Majestic Major Lazer - 7 Favorite Songs

I've been on a Major Lazer binge lately, just can't get enough. The beats are always on point and the lyrics are solid. Major Lazer's sounds span a variety of genres, most commonly they feature a fusion of reggae and EDM. Perfect dance party music.

Major Lazer's videos are pretty awesome too. Some parts can be a bit risque; twerking seems to be a requirement for Major Lazer video. I find that it is still milder than most and love how they tell a story in addition to showcasing awesome dance moves.

I could listen to this song over and over again. One of my favorite things about Major Lazer is that their songs are so different from each other because they often feature different artists. I have never heard of the Dirty Projectors before but I had to look them up after hearing Amber on this track. Love her voice!

Warning: this video will probably give you wanderlust. I totally want to go to India now, the architecture is gorgeous and I love the bright colors. You can even learn how to dance to this song directly from the choreographer in this dance tutorial featured on Major Lazer's Youtube channel.

This video might be my favorite because I can totally relate to it's dorkiness. My brother and I have seriously had sword battles like this before except for not so choreographed and a bit more attack like lol. The house reminds me of my grandma and grandpa's home. The song rocks too, total battle music.

This is yet another case for wanderlust. Can't travel back to the 90's but I bet Jamaica is still just as dope. Everyone's just so good at dancing in this video, even the little ones! Seriously good material for my dance goals. Love the outfits too, I'm all about the neon.

Ukulele meets EDM in Sound Bang. It totally reminds me of living in Hawaii. Good vibes.

There isn't an official video for this song but it is so dope. There are lots of ridiculously awesome dance videos out there for this song. I really like this one by Ke'Aira Roberson.

Being a huge fan of Santigold, I really wish there was an official video for this song. This was one of the first Major Lazer songs that I remember listening too and it is still as good as ever.

Music Spotlight - The Dandelion Deadbeats #newfavorite

Described as, "Death Pop/ Polite Punk" The Dandelion Deadbeats are just my style - Pop/Punk with a bit of Ska. They are joining my list of top favorites along with the Unicorns and Pixies. The only downside is that they live in Bergen, Norway which is pretty far from Portland, OR. Norway is totally on my bucket list but I bet that they would do really well touring over here. Just sending that out to the Universe.

Oh how I wish I knew how to play guitar this precisely - maybe one day. This video is fun to watch, matches the music perfectly and it is brilliantly simple.

This is the song that first got my attention. <3 the sound and I had to click on it once I saw Converse. One of the many keys to my heart.

This song sounds totally different in each version. This is the rockin' version, perfect for your garage punk/emo/grunge/hipster party.

This acoustic version is chill and calm. Perfect hide-away-from-the-world music.

One of my favorite things about the Dandelion Deadbeats is the balance between bright/cute sounds and soulful/sad lyrics, especially prominent in this song.

If you are a fan I highly suggest that you follow The Dandelion Deadbeats on Soundcloud. They seem to post a lot of new tunes on there. Speaking of Soundcloud if you haven't followed me yet, I would love to be friends :).

Hope that you all are having a beautiful start to your week. I know I am really looking forward to the summer, bring it on!

More Than An Angel - New Original Song on Soundcloud

Sooner or later we all find ourselves in a situation in which we lose our innocence. Some people seem to glide effortlessly through this, remaining unaffected. Some chose to stay ignorant. Others feel shattered to the core when they realize how brutal the world can be and hurt that things were hidden from them. Some runaway, hide, shout and/or break things. A select few rise to action to try to fix the things that they don't like about the world.

I think I have done all of these things in different situations! There have been points in my life when I felt so overwhelmed that I just couldn't process or deal with things. Then I learned that it's okay to break down every once in awhile. Becoming aware of things can be intense, especially for emotional people. Sometimes it can feel a bit hopeless. Still yet, I feel like it is so much better to learn what is going on in the world and in my own life, the good and the bad.

The more I try to learn the more I realize that I will continue to be the naive one in many circumstances because there are so many things to learn and knowledge itself is always changing and growing. But having an open mind and a lot of patience is all you ever really need to show you care. Growing pains hurt no matter how old you are but if you deal with them gracefully they will make you a better person in the end.

Hope that you are all having a great start to your week!
